Dental sedation involves the administration of medication to help you relax and feel comfortable during your procedure. The medication can be administered orally, intravenously, or through a gas or air mixture.
Many patients find the thought of receiving a dental injection or oral surgery to be highly stressful. To help our patients feel at ease and to make procedures go as smoothly as possible, we offer IV dental sedation. IV dental sedation is a safe and highly effective form of dental sedation. The patient is put to sleep through the intravenous (IV) sedative. When the patient wakes up, he or she has no memory of the procedure and feels no pain or discomfort.
Intravenous sedation involves injecting medication directly into the bloodstream. The medication takes effect immediately, and patients typically feel a rush of relaxation. Because the medication is injected intravenously, no pill is required.
IV sedation is the deepest form of dental sedation we offer. It is administered through a small needle into a vein. The medication flows directly into the patient’s body through the IV, and the patient can usually feel the effects of the medication quickly. The effects of IV sedation can last for several hours. IV sedation is incredibly safe.
IV sedation is most often used for longer procedures, such as oral surgery like wisdom teeth removal, dental implant placement, and root canals, or for patients who cannot tolerate any discomfort during the procedure.
Prior to administering sedatives, your dentist will thoroughly review your medical history. Certain conditions such as high blood pressure, asthma, diabetes, thyroid problems, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, or sleep apnea may disqualify you from receiving sedation. Certain medications such as blood thinners, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety medications, and muscle relaxants may also impact the safety of your sedation. Besides, your dentist will monitor you closely while under sedation. They’ll also ensure your vital signs are within normal range.
IV dental sedation allows patients to relax throughout their dental treatment. Patients will not remember much of their treatment, which is ideal for patients with dental anxiety, strong gag reflex, or who need numerous procedures performed in a single visit.
