Photobiomodulation Therapy is a non-invasive therapeutic light treatment that uses a low-level laser or light emitting diodes (LEDs). This therapy helps repair damaged cells at the cellular level. This, in turn, increases circulation and oxygenation of the blood, which promotes the healing of the soft tissue.
Photobiomodulation therapy, also known as low-level light therapy, uses red and near infra-red light from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to decrease inflammation, decrease pain, decrease swelling, and speed up healing. This therapy is safe, effective, and non-invasive. It’s often recommended after oral surgery to ease pain and discomfort from TMJ, promote the healing of oral lesions, and improve several existing conditions.
The wavelengths used in a PBM treatment are between 600-900 nm. Applying this wavelength to the tissues is absorbed by chromophores such as cytochrome c oxidase, NADH, and porphyrin. These chromophores convert light energy into usable energy. This energy is used to promote cell repair, reduce oxidative stress, and reduce pain in the area where the beam is applied.
PBM therapy has many benefits for chronic and acute conditions. This includes relieving pain, reducing inflammation and swelling, improving tissue repair, and decreasing healing time.
The benefits offered by Photobiomodulation Therapy include the following:
Photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) is a type of low-level laser therapy (LLLT). It is a light therapy that uses lasers or LEDs to improve tissue repair and reduce pain and inflammation in the area where the beam is applied.
PBM therapy is generally safe and non-invasive. You may feel some warmth in the treatment area, as well as a slight tingling or prickling sensation. This shouldn’t last long and shouldn’t be painful.
